A Beautiful Journey: My Experience as Assistant Director

Stepping into the role of Assistant Director for "Beautiful - The Carole King Musical" has been a highlight in my 22-year journey in musical theatre. This opportunity, made possible by a generous grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, allowed me to work alongside the talented director Kelly Thornton and the dedicated teams at the Segal Centre in Montreal and the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre (RMTC).

The production opened in Montreal on October 15, 2023, and due to its overwhelming success, it was extended until November 15. We then brought the captivating story of Carole King to Winnipeg, where it ran from January 9 to February 3, 2024, at RMTC.

In this role, I delved deeper into the art of storytelling and collaboration, building on my extensive experience as a performer. The process was a masterclass in leadership and creative decision-making, offering a fresh perspective on the intricacies of directing a musical. I had the privilege of contributing to the creative choices that shape a production, all while being mentored by one of Canada's leading directors.

"Beautiful" is a musical that resonates with audiences on many levels, and being part of this production was a reminder of the power of theatre to inspire and connect. It was an honor to help bring the story of music legend Carole King to the stage and to witness the impact of her music on both the cast and the audience.

As I reflect on this experience, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to further refine my skills as a director and for the invaluable lessons learned along the way. I look forward to bringing these insights to future projects and continuing my journey in the world of theatre.

I acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.
